Introduction Study Notes

I want to familiarize or reacquaint you with a central figure in Baptist history and communion, and that would be Dr. Joseph Harrison Jackson. Now, he was affectionately known by a number of different names. This is his more formal name, and that is Dr. Joseph Harrison Jackson. He was also called J.H. Jackson or even Jack. He is a central figure in Baptist history. He presided over the National Baptist Convention from 1953 to 1981 for a period of 31 years. I'm going to talk about that extensively. Much of the rise in the fall, if I could put it that way, of the National Baptist Convention over the course of those years, he stood at the helm. He was a controversial figure as it relates to the modern civil rights movement. He had conflict with Dr. Martin Luther King. He himself was a conservative.

One of the most memorable moments of him, either good or bad, was his hugging of Richard Milhouse Nixon in the 1973-74 year of the National Baptist Convention. It happened to be the same year that Nixon would resign as a result of Watergate. So he is an extremely controversial figure. I want to talk to him. I want to talk to you about him today. I want to talk to you about him today.
